DG's Newsletter - August 2024

Dear Rotarians, Rotaractors, and Friends of District 7230:

As we embark on the new Rotary year, I am filled with optimism and enthusiasm for the journey ahead. Our theme for this year, "Together," encapsulates our commitment to unity, collaboration, and shared purpose. Let us strive to achieve our goals by working hand in hand, embracing the diversity and strengths of our vibrant district.

**Leadership Meeting on July 1st**
Our Rotary year began on a high note with the well-attended Leadership Meeting on July 1st. This event brought together Past District Governors (PDGs), our District Governor-Elect (DGE), our District Governor Nominee (DGN), Deputy Governors, Area Governors, District Committee Chairs, and many other esteemed leaders of our district. The gathering, followed by a fellowship Dinner, was a testament to the dedication and commitment of our Rotary leadership, and it set the stage for a year of impactful service and fellowship.

**Club Visits and Installations**
Following the Leadership Meeting, I had the honor of visiting several clubs across our District to install club presidents and officers. These visits were incredibly inspiring, as I saw firsthand the enthusiasm and dedication of our members. Each installation ceremony is a dual celebration - of the leadership that will guide our clubs in making a difference in our communities and thanking the outgoing leadership for their service.

**A Call to Rotaract and Rotary Clubs**
To our Rotaract and Rotary clubs, I extend a heartfelt invitation to harness the Magic of Rotary. engage with your communities, innovate in your projects, and foster an environment where every member feels valued and empowered. Your efforts not only make a tangible difference but also inspire others to join our mission of service above self.  I am pleased to announce that in advance of “Membership and New Club Development Month” in August, we have just applied for a New Rotaract Club with 12 members to join the ranks of our District.  We are expecting quick approval.

**District Committee Chairs**
Our District Committees play a crucial role in supporting our clubs and advancing our goals. I am grateful for the dedication of our committee chairs, who bring expertise and passion to their roles. Together, we will address key areas such as membership growth, community service, and Rotary Foundation support.  If you wish to join any of our Committees to share your passion and talents, please get in touch with any of our Deputy Governors.

**August is Membership & New Club Development Month**
During the month Rotary Clubs around the world focus on membership in Rotary.   Let each of us chip in to build our Organization.  Each of you is a Membership Ambassador.  Talk to your friends and relatives about Rotary, post your Rotary activities on your social media pages.  Sponsor a friend or two into your Club, or if you think you have 8 or 20 of them, contact our Membership Committee membership@rotary7230.org to set up a new Satellite Club or a new Club.  Let us go for it.

**Looking Ahead**

As we move forward, let us remember the power of collaboration and the impact we can achieve when we work together. I encourage each of you to actively participate in district events, share your ideas, and support one another. Together, we can make this Rotary year one of the most successful and fulfilling yet.

Thank you for your unwavering commitment to Rotary. Let us continue to inspire, connect, and transform our communities.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Syed Alirahi

Club Bake Sale Raises Funds for End Polio

With the approach of the holiday season, Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Westchester NY went to work, donned their aprons and chef's caps, and meticulously prepared the dough, pouring them into trays and baking them in batches of freshly baked cupcakes.   Once the baking was done came the bright red toppings.

On Sunday, November 21, 2021, they carried the entire lot of more than 130 cupcakes to the Sunday School in Mount Vernon, NY.  Their purpose was to sell these cupcakes to the children and their parents and raise money for The Rotary Foundation's “END POLIO NOW”. campaign.

The hard work of the Club members paid off and the cupcakes all sold out quickly, raising nearly $250 for the campaign.  Shazia Alirahi, Secretary of the Club was assisted by her five daughters all of whom are members of the Club.

Club Team delivers school supplies to Dominican Republic children

Posted on Aug 18, 2021
Five members of the Westchester Rotary Club headed to the Dominican Republic in August carrying with them 14 suitcases packed with essential school supplies for children in the Dominican Republic.

Headed by Club International Projects Chair, Elmsford Deputy Fire Chief Nelson Diaz, the other team members are Club President Syed Alirahi, Secretary Shazia Alirahi, Treasurer Firoz Pathan, and Community Service Chair Maher Pathan.  The team traveled to Jamao Afuera - a poverty-stricken remote mountainous area about 100 miles from Santo Domingo.  They distributed the supplies to children in 5 schools in the area.  The Club members paid for the cost of their travel and their week-long stay there by themselves.

Based on feedback from the area, the team purchased backpacks, notebooks, pencils, pencil sharpeners, pens, erasers, crayons, triangle ruler sets, for distribution to the children before the school year began in September.  All of the individual items have the Club and Rotary logos attached identifying them as being provided by the Club.  The waterproof backpacks have large stickers on the back so that the Rotary logo and Club name are visible when the children are carrying them on their backs.

The team also held meetings with local school and town officials, as well as Rotary Clubs in Santo Domingo.  Project Chair Nelson Diaz is from the area and President Alirahi, who speaks fluent Spanish, spoke about Rotary, its ideals, and Rotary's goal of providing assistance in education and literacy.  The total cost of the items was $6,200 and were purchased from funds donated by Club members and from funds raised through a raffle.   The Club has received for a District Grant to cover part of the project costs.

Club Provides Assistance for St. Vincent Volcanic Ash Victims

The La Soufrière volcano on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent began a series of explosive eruptions on April 9, sending clouds of hot ash some 20,000 feet into the air, blanketing much of the island in ash and causing water and electricity outages. The air smells of sulfur and breathing without a mask means breathing in ash into your lungs. Life on the island is totally disrupted as the population is in a state of crisis. The latest eruption caused more ash to fall throughout the island and as far away as the island nation of Barbados, some 111 miles to the east.  Between 16,000 and 20,000 people have been evacuated from areas near the volcano, including about 3,000 who are staying in more than 80 government-run shelters. The primary needs at the moment are:
1) Bottled water,
2) N95 masks,
3) Paper towels and toiletries.
Our Club has gathered some of these items and provided them to the Church which is coordinating assistance efforts. The drop off point for donations in Westchester is First Community Church of the Nazarene, 2101 Saw Mill River Rd., White Plains, NY 10607

February is Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month

Rotary's February Theme:

Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month

Most of us are familiar with the reference to the “Twelve Days of Christmas” but did you know about the “Twelve Months of Rotary”? Rotary has identified a theme for each month. July is the first month of the Rotary year and is when the annual theme kicks in. It is also the month when new leadership takes over at Clubs, Districts and at Rotary International.  July’s theme is “Transition Month”. This year’s theme is “Rotary Opens Opportunities.”  The Theme for the 2021022 Rotary year is "Serve to Change Lives".

The monthly themes are meant to highlight the wide range of Rotary’s good work and give clubs some suggestions, timing, and guidance for their programs and activities.

Clubs are encouraged to invite speakers to their Club meetings on the monthly theme, organize special events and activities that highlight the theme and raise awareness of the theme and of Rotary.

Winter Blanket Distribution: Club's International Project

Winter always brings hard times to many people in many countries that Rotary works in.  This winter, in particular, many people are in greater need because of the pandemic.  What we can do together is much greater than what we can do alone.  Encouraged by that spirit, we partnered with a sister Club in Rotary District 3282 (Bangladesh) - the Rotary Club of Sylhet to arrange distribution of winter blankets for those who have no other way to fend off the cold weather,

Thanks to a donation from our Club President Syed Zaki Hossain, we pooled resources with the Rotary Club of Sylhet to arrange for distribution of blankets.  On a cold winter day on 17 January 2021, this joint project was carried out by the host Club.

Rotary’s Response to the 1918 Flu Pandemic

An estimated 500 million people worldwide became infected. Many cities closed theaters and cinemas, and placed restrictions on public gatherings. Rotary clubs adjusted their activities while also helping the sick.

This is how Rotary responded to the influenza pandemic that began in 1918 and came in three waves, lasting more than a year.

Rotary at the Start of the United Nations

Rotary and the United Nations have a shared history of working toward peace and addressing humanitarian issues around the world.

During World War II, Rotary informed and educated members about the formation of the United Nations and the importance of planning for peace. Materials such as the booklet “From Here On!” and articles in The Rotarian helped members understand the UN before it was formally established and follow its work after its charter.

Many countries were fighting the war when the term “United Nations” was first used officially in the 1942 “Declaration by United Nations.” The 26 nations that signed it pledged to uphold the ideals expressed by the United States and the United Kingdom the previous year of the common principles “on which they based their hopes for a better future for the world.”

History of Women in Rotary

Women are active participants in Rotary, serving their communities in increasing numbers and serving in leadership positions in Rotary. The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary.

“My fellow delegates, I would like to remind you that the world of 1989 is very different to the world of 1905. I sincerely believe that Rotary has to adapt itself to a changing world,” said Frank J. Devlyn, who would go on to become RI president in 2000-01.

The vote followed the decades-long efforts of men and women from all over the Rotary world to allow the admission of women into Rotary clubs, and several close votes at previous Council meetings.

Young Inventor Eco-Friendly Bricks Come Full Circle

Every hero has an origin story. “I was 10 years old when the entire journey started,” explains Binish Desai. It began with a cartoon called Captain Planet, an animated TV series from the 1990s about an environmentalist with superpowers. Desai can still recite the show’s refrain: Captain Planet, he’s our hero / Gonna take pollution down to zero! “That tagline stuck in my mind,” he says. “I wanted to do something to help Captain Planet.”

First Club in Philippines Opens Door to Rotary in Asia

In early 1919, Rotarian Roger Pinneo of Seattle, Washington, USA, traveled to the Philippines to try to organize a Rotary club in Manila. Leon J. Lambert, a Manila business leader helped Pinneo establish the club. Several months later, on 1 June 1919, the Rotary Club of Manila was chartered and became the first Rotary club in Asia.

The club would be the only one in the country for more than 12 years. Eventually, Manila club members organized Rotary clubs in the Philippine cities of Cebu (1932) and Iloilo (1933). Iloilo club members then started a club in Bacolod (1937), and Rotary continued to expand across the country.
